Pumpkin Ondeh Ondeh
After making Abok Abok Sago, I still have some white grated coconut left. Since I do not want to waste them, I also made a small portion of Ondeh Ondeh with pumpkin on the same day. The original Ondeh Ondeh is actually green in colour which made with pandan juice. This is also one of my childhood favourite sweet snacks (not sure they are from the Malay or Peranakan origin). I just love to pop the whole Ondeh Ondeh into my mouth and get the explosive feel of melted gula melaka …. mmm… so yummy!!

Serves: 16 pieces
Ingredients
- 160g Glutinous rice flour
- 10g Tapioca flour
- 120g Pumpkin
- 80-100g Pandan water (boil 300g water with 2 pieces pandan leaves)
- 100g Gula melaka (palm sugar) ~ diced
- 150g White grated coconut
Instructions
- Steam white grated coconut with ⅛tsp salt for 10 minutes.
- Cut pumpkin in wedges. Steam pumpkin for 10 minutes or till soft and mash with a fork.
- In a large bowl mix glutinous rice flour, tapioca flour and mashed pumpkin together, slowly add 80g pandan water into it and knead to a smooth dough. If dough is too dry add a little more pandan water into it or little more flour if it is too wet.
- Pinch dough into small ball (about 10g), slightly press flat and fill with gula melaka and roll into smooth ball again.
- Bring a pot of water to a boil and drop the little dough balls into it.
- When they float to the surface and let it boil for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove them with a slotted spoon and shake off excess water.
- Roll the cooked glutinous balls over the white grated coconut.
- I like to serve them warm.

Here is the canned pumpkin: https://www.traderjoes.com/fearless-flyer/article/4400
I noticed from the pics in your post that what you used is called acorn squash in the US. Over here when we refer to pumpkins, the flesh is more orange/light brown.
Thank you for any response.
Thank you for your information 🙂
Hello. I have a can of pumpkin pulp here in the US. I am thinking of using that. If so, What would be the right amount, in terms of cups? Thank you.
Hi Seri, From google search 3/4 cups of pumpkin puree is about 175g. So you need to adjust the pumpkin pulp to a little less than 3/4 cups.
Thank you for coming to my rescue again…! Appreciate it!
Ann, do I increase the tapioca flour or rice flour if I want it to be more chewy? How much to increase without affecting the overall taste? Thanks, Ann!
Ann, no worries, its ok. Thanks!
Ai Li, I don't know leh… because I only used this measurement. sorry 🙂
@Lite Home BakeThanks Lite Home Bake for your nice words 🙂
Ann, I did this today…it was yummy, the skin was soft and chewy. I replaced pumpkin with sweet potato as I did not have any pumpkin. However, my rolled balls burst even before I put them into the boiling water. They didn't burst when I was rolling them but they burst a short while later after they were put down onto a plate. Why is this so? Overall, it was yummy and my husband loved it. Thanks!
Ai Li, I think you need to add a little more water as sweet potato is not as wet as pumpkin and has higher fiber. Next time when you make this again, cover the uncooked balls with a cling wrap.
Thank you, Ann for your advice. 🙂
@seanSean, 加了木薯粉感觉会比较Q,皮不会软软的。Esther, 呵呵。。。好像大家都是这样吃法 ):
Ann, this is absolutely brilliant. I had tried substituting the sweet potato in Ang Ku Kueh with pumpkin before so I can imagine that this would work beautifully.
