Cendol is a popular and traditional dessert originating in South East Asia. The dessert basic ingredients consist of coconut milk, cendol (a worm-like jelly made from rice four with green food coloring ~ usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and gula melaka (palm sugar). Next to these basic recipe, other ingredients such as red beans, grass jelly, creamed corn or even durian, might also be included. (from wiki)

Serves: 3 servings
- 200g Gula Melaka (palm sugar)
- 1 cup Water
- 2 Pandan leaves (knotted)
- 250g Coconut milk + ½ tsp salt
- 1 packet Cendol strip
- Cooked red beans (from my Red Bean Soup)
- adequate shaved ice
- Roughly chop gula Melaka to pieces.
- Place gula Melaka, water, pandan leaves in a pot and cook over medium heat till thoroughly dissolved.
- Discard pandan leaves and strain the syrup. Set aside
- Add salt to the coconut milk and chill in refrigerator.
- To serve, place 2 tbsp of cendol strips, add cooked red beans in to a glass, gula melaka syrup (3-4 tbsp depending how sweet you want), shaved ice and top with coconut milk.

Oh I know this dessert! It was popular drink among my friends when we were in college. I used to steal some red bean part because I didn't care much about the jelly part. I didn't know the proper name for it. Wow you made it at home! Very impressive! It's great with SE Asian dishes!

Homemade cendol is always very fresh and beautiful. I used to eat the traditional Malay ones with homemade cendol strips with specks of pandan in them. I really missed eating the Malay version.

over here, we have people serving red kidney beans too in their chendol. oh, havent had this for quite some time!
Lena,I think Indonesian also serve with kidney beans and it is very nice because the beans are bigger than the red beans.

With the cooking red bean, it takes about 1 hour.
