Abok Abok Sago Gula Melaka
This is the second time I posted this Abok Abok Sago recipe. The first time I made was using green sago which gave a nice crystal green colour (here). The flavour was not as fragrant as this one here, because I used gula melaka in this recipe. Both texture are the same, soft and chewy. It was well received when I brought this yummy snack to a kid’s birthday party two weeks ago.

Very tasty recipe, especially the refined taste of palm jaggery. Thanks for sharing.
Please I need a dozen! Ann, they look beautiful and tasty.
It's been ages I've not had these addictive (for me though) goodies! Can't believe it's so easy to make them. Now I wanted to try & make some myself. Thanks for sharing this recipe. Have a lovely weekend. 😉
You're welcome Kit. 🙂
Hi Ann! I can't feel or taste it but it certainly looks soft and tasty. You have a great weekend too! TGIF!!!
Alvin, Can make this during weekend for your family. Is really yummy, I'm sure they'll love it!
They look so yummy! When I saw the photo I clicked and was sure I was going to make this recipe on the weekend, but alas… I don't even know what sago means :-(. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and looks like it's a kind of starchy palm. I probably can't find it here. Oh well… Do you do international shipments of your baked goodies? 😉
You may contact me at FB or email me @Ann Low@gmail.com if you need some ingredients from here.
I miss these Kuih!!!! They taste delicious. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Hi Ann, I just made this kuih. Super super nice and easy. I love it so much. Thank you for sharing your recipe! Jenny Lau.
Hi Jenny, Thank you for your feedback and so glad you liked this snack 🙂
Ann,I haven't eaten this kuih for ages! I love the fragrance and the chewy-chewy texture.
Do hope I can get the sago and try to do this…
I love the texture of this dessert, and have yet to try to make…looks awesome Ann.Have a wonderful weekend 🙂
Oooh….I love this. Must be many, many years since I last ate it. I like it cold when eaten in hot weather. Ann, now you really make me miss home….haha.
Mary, wish you can be here so that I can make this snack for you 🙂
I know I don't need to imagine that this snack has great flavor combination. Sago-Coconut-Gula Melaka! Oh this is just our typical south east Asia beloved combo 😀
I miss these Kuih!!!! They taste delicious. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Oh….this is a simple to make sweet dessert! The gula melaka makes this abok abok sago taste much more yummy.
Mel, yes this is very easy to make. Have a try 🙂
Love this! Chewy and fragrant…especially because of the gula Melaka! Yummy! Thanks for sharing this recipe Ann!
Looks really delicious, Ann! I have not eaten this in a long, long time. Sago is not found here in the US and tapioca pearls don't work as well. They tend to melt. Thanks for sharing this treat at Tea Tattle Thursday.
Hi Biren, perhaps I can send you some. Thanks for hosting Tea Tattle Thursday 🙂
I have gula melaka at home but I don't have fresh shredded coconut, ai, i love this abok-abok sago, I know they taste awesome!
Jessie, can use desiccated coconut but of course fresh one is better lol!
Mmm…. I've never had this kuih for a long, long time. Good for tea and snack!
this abok sago is a traditional food from Ambon, Maluku – Indonesia and the real named of that sago is Ongol-Ongol (not abok sago) also if u really want the real taste use coconut sugar not palm sugar, use santan not water. more delicious
i will post the real ingredient of this ongol-ongol soon at Asian Food Channel Timeline for more information
Hi Oktavia, thank you very much for the information. I always thought gula melaka is coconut sugar. As I'm not familiar with Malay language, I'm learn more from you 🙂
Wonder it can be kept overnight in the fridge?
Thanks
Thank you Ann 🙂
Yes keep in the fridge overnight and steam for few minutes again the next day.
Hi Ann, if I want the texture to be more chewy, do I reduce the water amount? If yes, how much should I reduce? Thanks!
Hi Ai Li, Have you made this recipe before? I find the texture is just right but if you’ve tried this recipe before you should know how much water you want to reduce.
Hi Ann,
Last weekend I made abok abok Sago & Kuih Kosui both turn out perfect. I never guess I can make this at first try. It was so easy & yummy!…. but a bit too sweet for me thank you very much
love that! a great asian dessert!
I know next to nothing as far as making kuih is concerned. This looks easy enough, but can you please help me how to measure 80g of water ???? How much in terms of ml ? Many thanks
Hi Lintsui, you can measure the water to 100ml if you don't want to use the weighing scale.
I've eaten the green ones but haven't tried this version 😛 I love gula melaka so next time , I'll buy some . Looks easy to make though , hopefully , I could make it sometime 😀
Anne, Have a try, can make smaller portion.

Hi Ann! I used to buy this kuih from the market to enjoy at home…must resist making this because I would be eating too much of it!
Hi Jeannie, hahaa… can make this kuih for family gathering.
Looks like kueh kosih. Did you use the big sago or the tiny ones?
I used the tiny ones. Texture is a little different because no flour is added.l
Irene,
Ann, these are very very nice! Since I made the last time, I have been finding opportunity to make it.
