Tofu Gratin
Today’s post is a a healthy dish – TOFU. Tofu can be prepared in many ways, including soups, meats, salads and desserts including Cheese Tofu, Tofu Tiramisu, Tofu Chiffon cake and many more. To some Tofu may be bland and tasteless but in my opinion with some simple ingredients Tofu can be the most wonderful dish in the world.
Here is the recipe
- Heat olive oil over a gentle flame and add flour, whisking briefly to form a roux (paste).
- Add soya milk (or use low fat milk) to the paste, whisking all the while until a sauce forms and thickens.
- Add miso paste (1 tbsp or add to taste) and continue whisking, then season with sugar and sake wine.
- Heat oven to 180C.
- Cut each drained and chilled tofu cake into four pieces.
- Place a tofu square in a ramekin or individual bowl and season with two spoonfuls, or more, of the sauce. Repeat with the rest of the tofu squares or serve it family-style in a shallow baking dish.
- Place tofu squares in the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until browned.
- Garnish with shredded nori seaweed and bonito flakes and serve immediately.
Beautiful tofu dish! What a wonderful departure from the normal stir fry and fried preparations. Definintely trying this, and I can imagine how tasty the sauce with wasabi was on salmon!
Ann, you are truly a great cook and baker! I bet this tofu tastes heavenly!
This sauce is genius! I thought what else I could do with miso paste other than miso soup and marinade. And i found your post, genius. I like you added wasabi on marinade too. That's clever. The soy milk in a recipe caught my attention. I will have to try this! Thanks Ann!

Beautiful and healthy tofu dish.
Just in time. I can use my red miso and try making this Agadashi-Tofu look-alike. But I have no flour at home (cos I don't bake) – wondering what I should do…hmmmm…
nice fusion work! Good old english gratin with an asian touch. The roux is also quite unique, using olive oil and not the usual butter, which makes the dish much lighter for the palate and healthier! Thanks for the recipe Ann!
Mmmmm….that looks very delicious. I'm copying the sauce to try one of these days. Thanks very much for sharing.
Hi Ann, I actually really enjoy tofu, whether it's in a stir fry, dessert, deep fried, or any other way. I think most people dislike it because they haven't eaten the right tofu dish yet. I can already see the tastiness of this just by looking at the picture. The bonito flakes and seaweed are the perfect finishing touch. Silken tofu is one of my favorites. This sounds wonderful. I really need to get some bonito flakes, they are such great additions.
Another great way to savor the goodness of soft creamy tofu! Yum! You are genius Ann! Note to self: Copy down…make it soon. 🙂
You are a genius, Ann! This is so good. I can never think of this.

This sounds delicous! Perfect for my vegan friend (without the bonito flakes for her though). I love all ingredients in this tofo dish. Simple and delicious. I'll definitely give it a try and pass on the recipe to my friend.
