Pork Bowl 猪肉盖饭
I enjoy eating Beef Bowl or Gyudon at Yoshinoya (a Japanese Fast Food) and used to cook this one dish meal at home quite often. When looking into my fridge tonight, I only have pork belly for Shabu-shabu….so why not make Pork Bowl instead.
200g Pork belly – slice thinly
1 Large onion – slice thinly
Some Brocolli – cut to smaller pieces and blanch in boiling water with some salt and a drop of oil –
dish up and put under running water for 30 seconds and drain.
Some Carrot – slice and put in boiling water, cook till soft.
Sauce:
1 Cup water
3 tbsp Mirin
3 tbsp Kikkomann soy sauce
1/2 tsp Hondashi
Method:
- Boil the sauce for few mins and add in slice onion and simmer till soft.
- In another pot, boil enough water and put the sliced pork belly in it and stir the pork belly till almost cooked and transfer into the sauce to cook for another few mins.
- Serve hot rice in a deep bowl, put cooked pork belly with sauce on top of rice. Place brocolli and carrot at the side and garnish with some nori seaweed.
- Enjoy Eating!

Gyudon is a nice and quick and tasty dish and I like the sound of this pork version.

Hi Murasaki,
I think there are about 1800 words of kanji being used in Japan, hope that I am not wrong.
As for this Pork Bowl, hope that the way I cook is correct.
Anncoo, any plan to set up a shop? hehe…
My first time to your blog, you have a nice blog, this definitely a simple a nice savory rice.
The character you used is the one the Japanese use for wild boar. There's a different one for domesticated pigs. I used to hate studying Kanji but now I'm glad I can read some (though I'm still not very good with them) because it opens up a whole new world of meaning for me.
I love fatty pork by the way so this meal looks very appetizing to me!
Hi Ashley,
Maybe you should try this one time 🙂
This pork bowl is japanese dish right??? I prefer pork cook in chinese style…. ^-^
Thanks for your reply! 🙂
Hi MH: Thanks for visiting my blog.
You can get the Hondashi at Cold Storage. (don't buy the Korean brand) Kikkomann is a less sodium soy sauce compare to the local brand. I always use kikkomann soy sauce when I am cooking Japanese dishes at home
Your "pork bowl" and "katsudon" look yummy! My hubby like to eat katsudon. Shall try one of this day. Thanks for sharing. BTW, where do you get your "hondashi"? Do you think other soy sauce will affect the dish, if you don't mind?
Hi Rachel, Ashley n Peachkins:
