Nian Gao Red Bean Soup 年糕红豆汤
Nian gao (年糕)is literally known as “Year cake” in Chinese and is one of the popular desserts served during the Chinese New Year. It’s a sticky, sweet rice cake made of glutinous rice flour and brown sugar. The nian gao is usually cut into slices and pan fried with flour and egg. In order to clear off my store bought nian gao quickly, I cut the nian gao into cubes and drop them into the hot red bean soup. The nian gao will soften in a few minutes and you’ll be surprised – the cubes of nan giao are a little chewy and not very sweet, really yummy! This is definitely another choice of easy dessert served for Chinese New Year!
Nian Gao Red Bean Soup
Ingredients
- 150 g red beans
- 1200 ml water
- 3 pandan leaves - knotted
- 85 g rock sugar
- 50 g sweet nian gao - cut into cubes
Instructions
- Rinse red beans and put pandan leaves and water together into pressure cooker. Lock lid in place
- Boil the red beans and water to required pressure then turn to medium low heat. Cook red beans for 30 minutes. Turn off heat, allow pressure to come down naturally, about 15 minutes.
- Discard pandan leaves. Heat up red bean soup and add rock sugar to boil, stir till sugar dissolved. Turn to low heat and drop in nian gao cubes. Cover with lid and simmer nian gao for about 3 - 5 minutes till softened and serve immediately.
Notes
Do not lock the pressure cooker lid, just cover it or without the lid and simmer lightly till nian gao softened.

年糕红豆汤
用家里剩下的年糕切成丁状丢入红豆汤里,又可以变成另一道美味的甜品。年糕QQ软软的,好吃!
Ingredients
- 材料:
- 150 克 红豆
- 1200 毫升 清水
- 3 片香兰叶,打个结
- 85 克 冰糖
- 50 克 甜年糕 - 切成丁状
Instructions
- 红豆洗净沥干和香兰叶一起放入高压锅内加上水。盖紧锅盖。
- 让锅内水煮开了,转入中小火煮30分钟。熄火,等待高压锅内冷却约15分钟,就可以打开锅盖了。
- 拿掉高压锅里的香兰叶。再开火加入冰糖搅至融化后转入小火,加入年糕丁,盖上盖让年糕在红豆汤里焖煮约3-5分钟至软便可马上享用。
Notes
当你加了年糕到锅里,只盖上锅盖就好,不需要锁紧锅盖或打开锅盖焖煮年糕至软也可以。

Ann, what a good idea to put nian gao cubes into the red bean soup. I love the chewy texture. I also love it deep fried with yam, though that is not so healthy.
